Hazard Perception Test (HPT)
The day you obtain your licence is a major milestone in life, but statistically, it’s also when you are most at risk on the road. The likelihood of a road crash increases significantly the moment you move to your P Provisional licence.
To help reduce these risks, measures like the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) are in place.
NSW Hazard Perception Test (HPT)
To progress from your Learner licence (L’s) to your Provisional P1 licence, you’ll need to pass the Hazard Perception Test. This is an online driving simulation designed to assess your ability to identify and respond to hazards, making safe decisions in real traffic scenarios.
This test differs from the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT), which you complete to obtain your Learner licence.
What is the Hazard Perception Test (HPT)?
The HPT is a computer-based, touch-screen test that evaluates your ability to detect and react to potentially risky situations on the road. It simulates real-world traffic conditions to measure your hazard awareness and safe driving skills.
The Hazard Perception Test (HPT)
The HPT involves viewing short film clips of traffic situations where you’ll need to respond to potential hazards by touching the screen. For example, you’ll indicate actions like overtaking, slowing down, or making a turn when appropriate.
What to Expect in the Test
- You will watch 15 film clips that require responses, with two practice questions provided beforehand.
- The scenarios assess your ability to:
- Make early decisions to avoid accidents.
- Safely navigate intersections and avoid collisions.
- Leave adequate space for cyclists.
- Stay alert to your surroundings and spot potential hazards.
- Identify safe gaps for turns.
- Determine when overtaking is safe.
Booking the Hazard Perception Test
- You can book the HPT after holding your Learner’s licence for at least 10 months.
- Passing the HPT is required before scheduling your driving test to obtain your Provisional licence.
- Once you pass, the test result is valid for 15 months. If you don’t complete your driving test within that time, you’ll need to retake the HPT.
What to Bring to the HPT
- Your Learner’s licence.
- A completed application form.
- The $47 test fee (note: you must pay this fee again for each retake).
Can You Practice for the HPT?
While you practice hazard perception every time you drive, additional preparation can improve your chances of passing the test on the first try. Here are some tips:
- Online Practice Tests: Access and complete the 35 practice questions available online. Review and repeat them until you consistently answer them correctly.
- Hazard Perception Handbook: Read this resource on the RMS website to familiarize yourself with key concepts.
- Driving Lessons: Book a lesson with a qualified driving instructor focusing specifically on hazard perception.
- Safer Drivers Course: Enroll in this program to enhance your understanding of safe driving techniques and hazard detection both inside and outside the vehicle.
With preparation and practice, you’ll develop the skills needed to pass the HPT confidently and drive safely on the roads.
So, What is a Hazard Anyway?
A hazard is anything you encounter while driving that could potentially be dangerous and lead to a crash or incident. This could include anything from pedestrians crossing the road, wet weather conditions, or the actions of other cars on the road.
Even experienced drivers can practice the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) online to help increase their awareness of road hazards. The practice tests consist of 7 questions each, with a total of 35 practice questions available.
Once You Have Completed the HPT
As of November 20th, 2017, you must complete the Driving Test after passing the Hazard Perception Test. Upon passing both, you will be eligible for your P1 Licence.
